Think of Rajasthan, and visuals of Maharajas, Maharanis, warmth, hospitality, culture, good food, and endless beauty crowd the mind. My trip to Ajmer was all these things and much more. I explored my spiritual side, revisited history, relished good food, picked local handicrafts, and enjoyed the warm-heartedness of the locals in my laconic but unforgettable trip to this place. If Ajmer is on your travel list, let me help you explore the gorgeous city by sharing with you the best places to visit in Ajmer.

Best places to visit in Ajmer

Spiritual places

Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Ajmer is famous for Ajmer Sharif Dargah, the sacred tomb of Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti. A revered Sufi saint of the early 13th century, Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti made Ajmer his home shortly after arriving in India. He breathed his last in the city, and the Dargah is his final resting place. Mughal emperor Humayun constructed the Dargah in 1532.

The Dargah of Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti welcomes people from every faith all year round. It is a true piece of art that celebrates Mughal architecture.

The gorgeous Nizam Gate dipped in yellow gold to the pristine white marble dome, the courtyards, and the masjids, everything inside the Dargah premise is an architectural marvel.

The Dargah comes alive during nights when the Qawwals present their soulful melodies and during the annual Urs celebration when spirituality, culture, and celebration envelop the entire town.

Nareli Jain Temple

Situated 7 km from the city center, Nareli Jain Temple is another place of spiritual significance in Ajmer. It is a significant religious site for Digambar Jains.

Besides the main temple structure, there are 24 miniature temples perched on the hill. These 24 miniature temples or Chaubisi denote the Thirthankars or 24 Jainalays.

Apart from seeking blessings, people also visit this gorgeous temple to admire the architecture, which is a blend of traditional and contemporary. The strategic location of the temple (at the foothills of the Aravalli mountain range), the beautiful architecture, and the elaborate sculptures make it worth visiting.

Nasiyan Jain Temple

Nasiyan Jain Temple, also known as Soniji Ki Nasiyan or Ajmer Jain Temple. It is devoted to the first of the 24 Tirthankaras, Lord Rishabhdev (Agnidev or Adinath). It was built in 1865.

This temple is breathtakingly beautiful. The building was constructed using red sandstone, which gives it the name, Red Temple.

The prayer area has a beautiful idol of Lord Rishabhdev or Adinath. The main chamber of the temple, also known as the Swarna Nagri or “City of Gold”, will leave your eyes wide open. It houses wooden figures plated with gold, depicting the five life stages of Lord Adinath.

Another highlight is the wood-carved city of Ayodhya, also plated with a thousand kilogram of gold. Belgium stain glass, paintings, and glass illustrations also make up for an alluring sight.

The gorgeous lakes

Nestled in the lower slopes of the Taragarh Hill of the mighty Aravalli Range, Ajmer serves you gorgeous views of the mountains as far as your eyes can see. The two artificial lakes are the added embellishments that enhance the beauty of this city by manifolds.

Ana Sagar Lake

The Anasagar Lake was constructed by Emperor Anaji Chauhan between 1135 AD and 1150 AD. It is spread across 12 kilometers and is 4.4 meter deep. It is one of the best places to visit in Ajmer.

Located in the heart of the city, the lake has the most enticing sunset views to offer. The gleams of sunrays, calling it a day, dance on the surface of the water, creating a magical view.

A musical fountain comes alive every day after sunset, which fills the lakes with gorgeous colors and music. There are several vantage points to relish this phenomenal sight, including the Daulat Bagh Garden, constructed by Emperor Jahangir, and the Khobra Behroon Temple.

You can either sit down to enjoy the pristine views of the lake from the Baradari (pavilions of the Daulat Bagh Garden) or entertain the adventure junkie in you with a water scooter ride.

You can also take a boat ride to the island located in the midst of the lake.

Foy Sagar Lake

Foy Sagar Lake is another must-visit place in Ajmer. Constructed in the 19th century, it is named after the Englishman Mr. Foy, whose role was instrumental in the construction of the lake.

The tranquil water with the backdrop of the Aravalli Range creates an enchanting view. This lake is one of the most favorite picnic spots, both among the locals, as well as tourists.

Many birds will come to meet and greet you. Just keep your camera ready.

Historical monuments and museums

Rajasthan and history go hand in hand. Here are the best places to visit in Ajmer that bear historical significance:

Taragarh Fort

The history of the majestic Taragarh Fort dates back to the 8th century. Ajayaraj Chauhan constructed this fort.

The three getaways, Phuta Darwaza, Lakshmi Pol, and Gagudi ki Phatak are in ruins today. The fort also houses Miran Saheb ki Dargah.

Adhai-Din Ka Jhopra

One of the best places to visit in Ajmer, Adhai-Din Ka Jhopra, is only 500 m away from the Ajmer Sharif Dargah and around one and a half km from the Ajmer Junction.

There is a very interesting story associated with the ruins of this mosque. If legend is to be believed, this mosque was constructed in only two-and-a-half days, hence the name. On the other hand, some say that Adhai-Din Ka Jhopra signifies a festival celebrated for two-and-a-half days.

Built in 1153, it was originally a Sanskrit College. In 1198, when Muhammad of Ghori captured the city, he converted it into a mosque. He later constructed the seven-arched walls. Watch closely, and you will see beautiful Islamic calligraphy on the walls.

The place is in ruins now but is frequented by tourists.

Akbari Fort and Museum

Any trip to Ajmer is incomplete if you skip this majestic historical monument now known as the Government Museum of Ajmer.

Constructed in 1570 by Mughal Emperor Akbar as a resting place during his visits to Khwaja Garib Nawaz, it once served as the residence of Prince Salim. Today, it houses a museum that exhibits a collection of sculptures and armor of Mughals and Rajputs.

This place bears great significance in history because it is where Emperor Jahangir met Sir Thomas Roe and permitted the entry of the British into India.

The Museum was established in the year 1949. The three sections of the museum exhibit a collection of sculptures, including some excavated material from early civilizations. Famous historians and archeologists contributed to enhancing the collection.

The collection of epigraphs and armor is very impressive.

Pro Tip:

Do not visit the museum on Mondays. It is open to people every day from 9:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., barring Mondays.

The great Rajput Warrior, Prithviraj Chauhan is celebrated in every corner of Rajasthan, and a little more in Ajmer as he was from here. The Prithiviraj Smarak is a memorial boasting a majestic statue of the king carved in black stone.

Mounted on his horse, he has a bow and an arrow in his hands. Perched on the Taragarh Road, the memorial is often flocked by tourists. Prithviraj Smarak is a tribute to the bravery and patriotism of this Rajput Chauhan hero.

The statue is situated on a hill surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It offers a breathtaking view of the city. There is a garden adjacent to the statue and eateries as well. It is the perfect place to stop by traveling from Ajmer to Pushkar or vice versa.
