Here’s Why You Should Dine at the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur

by | Jul 12, 2024 | Food | 0 comments

I loved the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur so much that I went there twice. Yes! Of course, across two different trips. And yes, there are plenty more places to try out so why this one? Location? Yes! Food? Yes! Aesthetics? Yes!

This place ticked all the boxes especially during my second trip during the Gangaur Festival. I wasn’t aware that all cafes don’t operate year-round and a few only operate during the peak seasons. But this café was operational even during the summers which confirmed that they are open at all times.

And why wouldn’t they? It overlooks the beautiful Lake Pichola and you can hop on the rooftop café to guess the popular sights to see!

How to reach Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur?

You can reach the café on foot, on a rented bike, or by auto. Most places in Udaipur cannot be navigated by car because the routes around the Old City aren’t big enough for cars to move.

The address of the restaurant is 84, Level, 5, Gangaur Ghat Marg, Udaipur, Rajasthan 313001.

The contact number listed is 086195 15956 and the place is open between 8:30 am and 11:30 pm every day!

My experience at the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur

The café is not only one of the best restaurants in Udaipur but it is centrally located making it an accessible option. It is a walk away from the Gangaur Ghat and offers mesmerizing views of the hills and the Lake Pichola.

If you’re looking for a list of the best non veg restaurant in Udaipur, this one would definitely make a mark. Being non-veg lovers, we tried kebabs, fish curry, and also cocktails to get into the party mood.

What felt most special is the vibe of the rooftop. I remember drinking a little too much than what I should have and the cool breeze flowing by just made me tipsier.

Well, I drink occasionally and have a tiny capacity so I refrain from more than two glasses of poison. But if you’re more like me on the work days when you’re looking for a café with select caffeinated beverages, this place can be yours too!

Yes, when I came here during Gangaur Festival in April 2024, I tried the fish fingers and coffee. Luckily, the place offers discounts with Zomato Gold that helped me bring my bill down to Rs. 600 for these two. It really helped me as I was on a budget trip with only around Rs. 3,000 to visit Udaipur from Jaipur for one day.

This time, the view of the Gangaur Ghat looked much more special as the locals were carrying idols on their head and moving towards that Ghat. It was special to experience Gangaur by Gangaur Ghat.

Why you should visit the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur?

Udaipur restaurants like the Sun and Moon café can be a charm because of the view and the aesthetics. This is also the reason why UPRE Udaipur was most definitely on our list and luckily, we got a reservation as we were staying at the Lake Pichola Hotel.

Location

When considering this place to eat, the location simply adds up because you are a walk away from the Jagdish Chowk. You can explore the temple and the City Palace right beside. You are also open to a variety of shopping options including handicrafts, bags, clothes, and so much more.

Seating options

Udaipur is famous for the monsoon season so you can experience the rooftop view while having a shed over your head if you’re stuck in the rain. While the open-air space is what I experienced back in August 2023, in April 2024 I was stuck in the rains.

Weird because August is monsoon in Udaipur and April means summertime! Well, thankfully the café has multiple floors so even if you can’t be on the rooftop, you can be on the floor right below.

Food options

Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur offers multiple cuisines so you’re in for the best of North Indian delights as much as Italian options. Since Rajasthan is frequented by a lot of European travelers, there are always pizzas and pastas across cafes. But you’re better off trying authentic North Indian food because that’s what would taste better.

You get a variety of veg and non-veg options along with beverages across hard and soft drinks. I love my coffee equally strong as a glass of liquor, and this place fit best for both leisure and work.

Timing

The café is open between 8:30 am to 11:30 pm because it is a part of Hotel Udai Niwas. It can not only offer food for extended hours but can also be your budget stay option. That way the eatery becomes more accessible to you. The hotel has 4.0 rating on Google and is a budget option that is a walk away from the prime attractions. The rating of this eatery on Google is 4.3 as of July 2024.

What to watch out for?

Udaipur was constructed by cutting down hills to create a space to live and thrive. There are places where you might not find an elevator or ones like this café where the elevator can hardly fit two people at a time.

Well, if elevators are claustrophobic to you, this is something you’d likely want to avoid. There is also a narrow stairway to take you to the top but that wasn’t what I was going to avail after the two drinks I couldn’t handle!
