I loved the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur so much that I went there twice. Yes! Of course, across two different trips. And yes, there are plenty more places to try out, so why this one? Location? Yes! Food? Yes! Aesthetics? Yes!
This place ticked all the boxes, especially during my second trip during the Gangaur Festival. I wasn’t aware that not all cafes operate year-round; a few only operate during peak seasons. But this café was operational even during the summers, which confirmed that they are open at all times.
And why wouldn’t they? It overlooks the beautiful Lake Pichola, and you can hop up to the rooftop café to spot all the prominent sights.
How to reach Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur?
You can reach the café on foot, by bike, or by car. Most places in the Udaipur City Palace area are inaccessible by car because the roads around the Old City aren’t wide enough for cars to pass.

My experience at the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur
The café is not only one of the best restaurants in Udaipur but also centrally located, making it an accessible option. It is a walk away from the Gangaur Ghat and offers mesmerizing views of the hills and Lake Pichola.

What felt most special is the vibe of the rooftop. I remember drinking a little more than I should have, and the cool breeze just made me even tipsier.
Well, I drink occasionally and have a tiny capacity, so I refrain from more than two glasses of poison. But if you’re more like me on workdays, when you’re looking for a café with a select few caffeinated beverages, this place can be yours too!
When I came here for work during Gangaur Festival in 2024, I tried their fish fingers and coffee. Fish isn’t something you’d easily want to try in a place that doesn’t have much access to rivers or seafood. But the experiment was worth trying!
Luckily, the place offers Zomato Gold discounts, which helped me bring my bill down to Rs. 600 for these two. It really helped me as I was on a budget trip with only around Rs. 3,000 to visit Udaipur from Jaipur for one day.
This time, the view of the Gangaur Ghat looked much more special, as locals were carrying idols on their heads and moving towards the Ghat. It was special to experience Gangaur by Gangaur Ghat, thanks to the Sun and Moon Café!
Why should you visit the Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur?
The Sun and Moon café is quite a charm because of its views and aesthetics. This is also why UPRE Udaipur was most definitely on our list, and luckily, we got a reservation while staying at the Lake Pichola Hotel.
Location
When considering this place to eat, the location simply adds up because you are a walk away from the Jagdish Chowk. You can explore the temple, City Palace, Gangaur Ghat, and Bagore ki Haveli all within walking distance. You are also open to a variety of shopping options, including handicrafts, bags, clothes, and so much more.
Seating options
Udaipur is famous for its monsoon season, so you can enjoy rooftop views while keeping a roof over your head if you’re stuck in the rain. While the open-air space is what I experienced back in August 2023, in April 2024 I was stuck in the rains.
Weird, because August is the monsoon season in Udaipur and April is summertime! Well, thankfully, the café has multiple floors, so even if you can’t be on the rooftop, you can be on the floor below.
Food options
Sun and Moon Café in Udaipur offers a variety of cuisines, so you’re in for the best of North Indian delights as well as Italian options. Since Rajasthan is frequented by many European travelers, there are always pizzas and pasta at cafes. But you’re better off trying authentic North Indian food, because that’s what tastes better.
You get a variety of veg and non-veg options along with beverages, including hard and soft drinks. I love my coffee equally strong as a glass of liquor, and this place fits best for both leisure and work.
Timing
The café is open from 8:30 am to 11:30 pm because it is part of Hotel Udai Niwas. It not only offers food for extended hours but also offers a budget stay option. That way, the eatery becomes more accessible to you. The hotel has a 4.5 rating on Google and 4.6 on Zomato, and is a budget option located at a short walk from the prime attractions.
What to watch out for?
Udaipur was built by cutting into hills to create space to live and thrive. There are places where you might not find an elevator, or ones like this café where the elevator can hardly fit two people at a time.
Well, if elevators make you claustrophobic, this is some place where you’d likely want to avoid using it. There is also a narrow stairway to the top, but that wasn’t what I was going to use after the two drinks I couldn’t handle!
