Trying Kolkata’s Finest yet Affordable Sushi at Snack on Sushi

by | May 9, 2026 | Food

It is funny how my name is Shusree and it sounds similar to sushi. If I didn’t like how it tasted, it would be quite a bummer! While I tried my first-ever sushi at Wasabee and the best at Pa Pa Ya, Snack on Sushi happens to be the most affordable yet delectable option among these three in Kolkata.

I have tried sushi in Asia Kitchen, Peter Hu, and a few more places. I have also had sushi in Thailand and Indonesia. But Snack On Sushi simply became my favorite, and I’ll give you all the reasons why.

Where is Snack on Sushi?

Being from South Kolkata, the location of Snack of Sushi is close to me because it is situated in Ballygunge. The exact address is 3/2 Baman Para Lane, Bondel Rd, Kolkata 700019 and Google map shows the correct address. If you’re booking a cab, feel free to add this and reach your destination at ease.

What to eat?

While we’re focusing on sushi (more so because of the name of the eatery), this is not the only thing you get here:

The beginning

For starters, you will be blown away by the Cream Cheese at 375 INR. They serve 4 pieces of dim sum in a bamboo basket filled with cream cheese that melts in your mouth instantly.

Don’t forget to add the chili oil and garlic sauce that they serve along with it. While it enhances the taste, I’d recommend you have one piece without adding any additional flavors. Trust me, the whiter the better!

The highlight

All sushi rolls are chopped into six pieces, but you can ask them to make it into eight if needed. For sushi, I have tried the Prawn and Cream Cheese Roll and the Crab Stick Roll. Both are priced at 575 INR and are simply delicious. However, I feel the authentic sushi is the kind that is raw. Try tuna and salmon if that is more of what you’re looking for!

The special mention

The Spicy Salmon Roll is my go-to option if I am not ordering the Grilled Salmon as my main course. While it is the most expensive dish on the menu (at 800 INR), it is one of the most delicious salmon dishes I have ever tried.

They serve the freshly cooked salmon with mashed potatoes and veggies. The pink strips on the fish make you immediately want to devour what you see on the plate. Every bite is worth the price charged for it!

The main course

Snack On Sushi also serves Ramen bowls, and I have tried the Japanese Katsu Curry Rice Bowl, worth 500 INR. The bowl had rice topped with bok choy (commonly used in Thai recipes), zucchini, broccoli, and more veggies. Gari (pickled ginger), chicken curry, and crispy chicken fries.

Not gonna lie, the curry tasted like it had Maggi masala added to it. Upon asking, they told us that is how it tastes and no amount of Maggi masala was used it in. Next time I’d like to try a spicy ramen bowl and pray that my stomach can handle all the hotness it brings along!

What not to try?

I think a classic rookie mistake that someone makes when they try sushi for the first time is ordering a sushi boat. Snack On Sushi like most sushi places have two boats, one that is fully veg and the other non-veg.

What goes wrong with these boats is that unless you’re okay with all types of meat/seafood you might not want to try it. There are many who’d happily have the crabstick roll or prawn sushi as they are cooked, while keep away from sushi that uses raw fish. I have tried a sushi boat in Wasabee and remember not liking every type of sushi I ate.

One more thing you should always do is ask the waiter how your food is going to taste. It is okay to not figure something out and ask questions associated, so you know what you’re paying for.

How to have sushi?

While I am no expert on having sushi, I can tell you that you need to first know how to hold a chopstick. It is always better to try noodles and rice with chopstick before trying to grip something as big as a sushi.

If you already know how to eat with a chopstick, you will be happy to know that Snack On Sushi does serve food along with these as cutlery. As accompaniments you will also have soy sauce, gari, and wasabi.

First you need to hold the sushi on your chopstick and put soy sauce on the meat part of your sushi. It is ideally not supposed to touch the rice portion of your bite. Many add wasabi on top of the meaty portion of the sushi before dipping it into soy sauce.

Gari acts as an antibacterial condiment that also refreshes your taste as you move from one sushi to another. So, if you’re ordering different types of sushi, you’re ideally to have gari after completing each type.

What I love about Snack on sushi?

On a Christmas afternoon when you’d expect most restaurants to be fully booked, we found a place to dine right away. While this can be a perk for diners, it isn’t something restaurant owners would like to read. Honestly, I feel, the location of Snack On Sushi could be one of the reasons for this. It is primarily accessible by Uber, Ola, etc., and only one auto service runs in that vicinity.

Sushi isn’t something that is highly popular in a place like Kolkata, so that could also be another reason why you’d easily be able to secure a place to sit. Also, the name of the restaurant (by default) portrays that sushi is the main thing that they serve. While they offer more things to try, sushi inevitably takes away the attention refraining some people from coming here (I feel).

But is availability the only thing I love about this place? No! I love this place because of the cream cheese. I have had cream cheese in sushi and other items before, but what they serve here is heavenly.

Pa Pa Ya does match the quality, but it is more expensive when you compare the prices of the two. I had Cream Cheese dim sum for both starters and dessert when I went there on my birthday. But there are dessert items that I haven’t tried yet. Honestly, the meal couldn’t have started or ended on a better note!

I hope this blog makes you take an attempt to try out this place because trust me, most sushi places are either overpriced or not as good as this one. This hidden gem shouldn’t be hidden anymore, so share this with someone who owes you a sushi date! Arigato Gozaimasu 😊
