Understanding the structure
Hanuman Chalisa is a Chaupai, a traditional Indian form of poetry that was ideally written in quatrain (verses of four lines). There are 40 verses in the Chalisa, including two dohas or couplets (two lines) at the beginning and the end of the Chaupai.
While the Chalisa was written for Lord Hanuman ji, the primary focus remains towards the devotion He has towards Lord Ram. Usually, devotees find the verse: “bhoot pishach nikat nahi aave, Mahabir jab naam sunaave” most prominent for self-protection to fight the fear of the unknown. However, what is interesting is how Hanuman ji is epitome of devotion and humbleness, the one who shrinks in size in front of the ones He reveres, while transforming into the mighty monkey God who once mistakenly ate the sun.

Who wrote Hanuman Chalisa?
Hanuman Chalisa was written by Goswami Tulsidas, a saint, philosopher, and poet during the 16th century (between 1497 and 1623). He was a devotee of Lord Ram and composed work in Awadhi making his writing accessible to the masses.
Awadhi is an Indo-Aryan language that was predominant during that era in the region we now know as Uttar Pradesh. Tulsidas translated Ramayana in Awadhi and authored Ramcharitramanas and Hanuman Chalisa.
Story of Hanuman Chalisa
The origin of Hanuman Chalisa happened due to a string of interesting events during the time Mughal emperor Akbar was in reign. Unlike popular belief, Akbar was not fond of other religions apart from Islam and anybody encouraging Hinduism wasn’t accepted secularly. At the same time, Tulsidas was gaining popularity in Kashi, Varanasi, spreading the word of Lord Ram and doing miracles with His blessings.
One day a lady came crying to Tulsidas as her husband had just passed away. Tulsidas knew why she was there before she cried for help and asked everyone around to start chanting the name of Lord Ram. This led to the revival of the deceased and soon the stories of his miracles reached the courtroom of Akbar.
The emperor summoned Tulsidas and challenged him to prove that His God exists. Tulsidas, in his low demeanour firmly responded that Lord Ram does not show up on an emperor’s whims and fancies, he only visits his ardent devotees.
Taking this as a direct insult amidst a courtroom full of people, Akbar sentenced Tulsidas to imprisonment at Fatehpur Sikri. During his imprisonment, Tulsidas wrote the Hanuman Chalisa and read it every day for 40 days straight. At the end of 40 days, Fatehpur Sikri started trembling as an army of monkeys marched towards the prison creating havoc all around. The guards were puzzled and sent the news to Akbar. The emperor was advised to let the saint go as it was the only way to stop the monkey attack.
Tulsidas was released from imprisonment and Fatehpur Sikri went back to normalcy. The emperor realized his mistake and the event must have answered the question about the existence of the Supreme and protection towards His devotees.

Well, the origin story of Hanuman Chalisa correlates with its significance. The enabling of writing the Hanuman Chalisa happened to Tulsidas ji when he was in a state of despair. It is believed that when a person is in dire despair, if he chants the Hanuman Chalisa with utmost faith, he will see a shift in his life within 40 days of chanting.
Hanuman ji blesses his devotees by protecting them from illnesses and adversaries. In situations, where a devotee cannot experience change in their circumstances, they find the endurance to bear pain.
